    Kimberly Burnham

A small child, I saw the world. I loved the words of science and nature, I learned from my father and the beauty I saw through my mother's eye, a painter.

My father grew up in the dry red rock desert of Southern Utah. He taught me to love nature and science, swimming in Lake Powell, camping in the Rocky mountains, traveling to game parks in Africa.

When I was eight years old, near a waterfall in a Colombian jungle my father helped me catch a blue morpho butterfly. Its huge, iridescent wings were the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. A few years later I was photographing lions in Ngorongoro crater in Kenya. Another time looking at works of art in the Louvre with my mother who is a painter, and then seeing a great horned owl in Shinjuku Park in downtown Tokyo at another time in my journey.

My life was about enjoying the beauty of this incredible world and capturing it in photographs and my mind's eye.

In my early twenties I lived in Japan. The attention to cultural designs, the pageantry of religious festivals, and the richness of the natural landscape makes Japan an incredible place to be a photographer. I came home with literally thousands of images captured on slides and in my mind's eye.

I learned about fractals, which I write about in my messenger mini book, Our Fractal Nature, a Journey of Self-Discovery and Connection, as well as in my chapter in Jack Canfield's Pearls of Wisdom, 30 Inspirational Ideas to Live Your Best Life Now!

Fractals are shapes: the branching shape of a tree, the networks in your brain or pathway of your blood vessels. Even your eyes have a fractal patterned shape. Looking at beautiful fractal images and the fractal in nature can even speed up healing.

It wasn't all beautiful. As a six year old I learned that the reason my mother wanted me to hold her hand when we went out was that I could be kidnapped or worse in Colombia. Someone spit on me because I was an American in Europe during the Vietnam war. I was twelve.

But by the time I was 28, I was working as a professional photographer and journalist in Toronto, Canada, which has amazing visual and cultural diversity.

    And then everything changed.
